Action, fun, storytelling, and excitement are all a part of The Children’s Chapter. Activities include hands-on crafts, engaging readings and meeting the authors all of which will stimulate the imagination and challenge creativity of all who attend.

The Saturday Children's Chapter is FREE and open to the public. This program offers children fun activities designed to encourage the love of books and reading. Crafts, author readings, storytelling, and other special projects are available all day. Featured children's authors sign books and talk with children and parents about reading and writing. The Friends of the Library join with us and offer activities for children as well. It's a wonderful opportunity to share the love of reading with young people.

Pirates on the Run

Every year, creative runners and walkers come dressed as pirates to compete in the Pirates on the Run. This year, you could be a winner just for your costume!
Amelia Island Runners is sponsoring a costume contest for runners and walkers in the 5K/10K and kids' runs on Feb. 5. The adult winner (age 13 and older) will be a $50 gift certificate from Current Running in Fernandina Beach, and the winning child (12 and younger) will receive a $25 gift certificate from Peterbrooke Chocolatier.
Judging for runners in the 5K/10K will be at 8 a.m. in the courtyard of St. Peter's Church. For kids in the fun runs, judging will be around 9:30 a.m. on the 11th Street side of Central Park, where the fun runs will be held. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremonies following the 5K and 10K, at the church.
To be eligible, contestants must be registered for the 5K/10K or kids' runs and can't be members of the Fernandina Pirates Club. Pirates Club members will be on the course and at the finish line in full regalia, and will award Pirate beads to finishers ! http://www.ameliaislandrunners.com/

Fernandina Pirates Club once again selects Last Leg Rally as Charitable Partner

Fernandina Beach, FL - The Fernandina Pirates Club, Inc. has announced the Last Leg Rally as an outstanding charitable partner for the second year in a row with a cash donation to this non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The Fernandina Pirates Club has over 80 volunteers that have provided charitable assistance to members and groups within NE Florida for several years. To kick-off 2011, the Pirates have once again donated to the Amelia Island Last Leg Rally.

A Meet & Greet Kick-Off Party will be Friday, February 25, at Sandy Bottoms Beach Bar & Grill from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. February 26 and 27 bring a full weekend of concerts, a Veteran’s benefit motorcycle ride, car show, bike show and vendors to be held in Wolf Park at Main Beach in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Proceeds from the events will directly benefit Anchors Aweigh Charters, Inc., also a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides no cost fishing charters to those with permanent physical and/or developmental disabilities as well as those diagnosed with a terminal illness. Established in 2002, Captains Steve and Wanda Hair have modified their 36 foot charter boat, Ye Ole Pirate; to include wheelchair accessibility and other handicapped devices to provide the highest level of safety and comfort for their passengers and crew. They believe that the objective of fishing is not always to catch fish, but that being on the water is therapy for the soul.

The Fernandina Pirates Club supports many different community charities including their own Pirate Scholarship Program and quarterly blood drives. These Scallywags also participate with other organizations such as Joy to the Children, the Council on Aging and providing Thanksgiving and Christmas to families helped by the Child Advocate Rapid Response Team just to name a few.

Having received a Resolution from the Board of County Commissioners of Nassau County as well as a Proclamation from the City of Fernandina Beach Commissioners recognizing the club for their ongoing community service and charity work, Pirate club members truly are our community’s “Goodwill Ambassadors to the World” as designated by both local government entities.

Avast Me Hearty! Talk Like A Pirate Day Be Near!

Yes, it's that time o' year again mateys. September 19 is 'Talk Like A Pirate Day' and we pirates arrrrrr gettin' ready to celebrate. This year ye will be finding us on Centre Street in beautiful Fernandina Beach, FL at the pocket parrrrrrrk between Second and Third Street.

If the WebWench ever gets the official Letter of Marque from the City, we will be once again cavortin' in the streets. We will be entertainin' the kiddies between 2:00pm and 5:00pm. As we get the activities scheduled, we will keep you informed right here on this blog. We currently have Pirate School with Lace the Looter scheduled for 2pm, 3pm and 4pm and a Treasure Hunt scheduled for 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm. Our own Pirate Jolly is planning to have Turtle Races (no, not REAL turtles) set up for the entire time. Of course there will be plenty of Pirates roamin' around to entertain the family. So come on out and join us and get your pirattitude on!

Baby It's Cold Outside!

As February comes to a close, may this unusual bout of cold weather go with it. Pirates don't own ice scrapers. The early morning wake up call to get the ship out of dry dock for "Pirates on the Run" required de-icing of the USS Dodge Ram. Upon mooring up to our ship, frost and hard ice was everywhere.

The crew of the Amelia Island Runners and their "Pirates on the Run" participants faced a chilly warm up session in preparation for the 5K and 10K race that day. By the start of the race, the Florida sun decided to get with the program and everyone was treated to a more spring like day.

The runners lined up on 9th Street in one of the largest spandex wearing crowds that I've ever seen. We positioned our cannon and three pistol bearing Pirates, waiting for the official countdown. One......two......BAMMMM! In the most perfect timing, every weapon went off in unison, bringing a joyful tear to our Pirate eyes. That old show off, Captain Jack Sparrow could not have done it bigger or better. We hope that the cloud of smoke that permeated the course did not hinder the hundreds of runners. Well, it did, sort of, but we're Pirates, and it was a cannon, and cannons are not without cannon fodder, and.... oh, you get the picture.

Our crew dotted the race course that stretched from 9th Street to Eagan's Creek Greenway, down the entire Greenway and back to 11th Street, where the finish line was waiting. Police, Auxillary Police and Pirates working in unison and it was a beautiful sight. OK, so we weren't exactly working but we were cheering the runners on. Our Captain has a rule about us Pirates working the street corners but that's another story.

The Kids Race was fantastic as usual and some of the kiddies even dressed like Pirates. They be lookin' good me bucko. Decked out in their best Pirate attire, running like they be runnin' from the law. Trust me, that's about as fast as a Pirate can run.

It's a Pirates Life For Me

It's been a good month for the Crew. The month of January gave us plenty o' pillaging and looting opportunities without any complaints. The winter months here are easy pickins and the weather is still better than just about everywhere else.

We Pirates decided to invade an Elderhostel Crew as they are an easy bunch, ripe for the pickin'. They were hanging out at the Amelia Island Museum gettin' ready to partake of the bounty of our island .    Our Swabbie Takara infiltrated their ranks and lifted the key. She snuck us in under cover of darkness and guided us right to their location where we took them by surprise. The Captain was pleased and she shanghaied herself a new cabin boy.

After the raid we went directly to Wicked Davey's Fancy Saloon to spend our booty where one of our own was busy hoisting a few pints in honor of his birthday. The crowd was a fierce one, full o' pirates, cutthroats and renegades. Good times! Good times!  Full o' friends, fun and plenty o' grog.

We returned to the ship and plotted out our next big raid. Since our supplies were fully stocked and the ship could hold no more, Wicked Wanda demanded we go out for blood. You have to watch that Wanda, she has made a career out of blood spillin' and she can get the Crew to join her in a heartbeat.

Wicked Wanda drew up the plan. One by one we joined her, ready for the bloodiest raid ever.  She took over two large land ships owned by the Crew of the Blood Alliance and with their help, nothing could stop us now. We were out for blood and we took it. Sixty seven pints were taken that day and Wicked Wanda couldn't have been more pleased.

The Captain was so pleased with our work that she gave us some time off. Not much, but we'll take it. We need to rest up before the Shrimp Festival (always the first weekend in May) when all hell breaks loose among our ranks. Big Red is already planning the invasion by collectin' our best sword slingers and pistoliers. Scarlet the Harlot went and got herself cut by some fancy pants doctor but her wound is finally healing and I hear told that she will be back in action again, collectin' the best merchandise to be found on the seven seas. Scarlot will be offerin' this booty for sale (at reasonable prices) during the Festival.

Meanwhile, the rest o' us will be keepin' busy with our regular jobs until someone gets an urge to pillage and loot again.

The Birth of a Blog

Welcome to the very first entry in what we hope to be a very informative and entertaining pirate blog or as we like to call it, a BLAAAAARG!

It's probably the best way to archive our events, so we're going for it.

First on our agenda is the formal announcement of a full blown Pirate Festival. The planning stages actually started a few years ago when the Club was presided over by Eric the Terrible. Eric has since stepped down as Club President and has moved on to bigger piracy. He's taken up public office here in Fernandina Beach as a City Councilman. Now that we have 'one of our own' in local government, we expect that he will insist on all of us Pirates to address him as Admiral or at least by the name he uses in public, Eric Childers. Eric the Terrible Councilman doesn't quite work well if you ask me.

Back to the planning of this Pirate Festival... Current Club President, Lace the Looter has been busy trying to take Eric's original concept and create an actual plan on paper. Lace has drafted up a basic agenda from various sources, loaded with many ideas and suggestions for this Pirate Festival. This should help to jumpstart a collective brainstorming session among our Membership at one of our meetings.

Of course we will have to do our homework before we even start the actual planning to approach the City in the process of permits etc. However, we consider ourselves blessed around here when it comes to that kind of stuff. The City of Fernandina Beach, FL, the City Council and City Events Cooridinator, Susan Hurley all take their jobs very seriously. Well, as seriously as they can on a beautiful, friendly, little island. Around here, 'being serious' translates into making every event a success.

As our Club moves into the planning stages we will keep you up to date with some of the developments and highlights of our very first Pirate Festival here on Amelia Island. Meanwhile, the Fernandina Pirates Club begins our annual preparations for the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival (always the first weekend in May) as the Shrimp Festival is near and dear to our hearts.
